Publisher's Blurb: "There is a warm spot in the heart of every boy for Horatio Alger, because he understood boys so well that his stories please them thoroughly. The spirit that he tried to infuse into the minds and hearts of American boys is just as desirable today as when Mr. Alger first penned his books. Love of home, country, parents; honesty, kindness, justice, valor, patriotism--all these the author dealt with in his stories, but in such a manner that the boy reader imbibes them unconsciously. Nevertheless, they become a part of him, and he really lives as Mr. Alger's heroes do--upright and God-fearing. These are not 'Sunday-school' books, but they well deserve to be, if the good influence they exert over the boy may be taken into consideration."
Notes / Commentary: The first 123 issues were issued semi-monthly from November 1915 to December 1920. At that time the series was discontinued though all the numbers were advertised in the S&S catalogues. In January 1925 the series was resumed on a bi-weekly basis with stories by Oliver Optic and others from the New Medal Library. An additional 7 Algers were issued making a total of 104. With the completion of the 202 numbers, the first series was concluded in December of 1927. A second series followed, reissuing some of the titles in a different order.
