First Sentence: Poor Tommy was, to use one of his own singular expressions, "in a peck of trouble" in consequence of having just received "a poundin' " at the hands of his father, and the promise of another "worse one," if he didn't "walk chalk and do as he'd orter."
Last Sentence: He had come to the wise conclusion that this thing of leaving a comfortable home and living on charity didn't pay, and neither does it.
