First Sentence: Every little ripple of that sea which looked so calmly blue and enticing, every little breath of wind which fanned the hot cheeks of the summer visitors on the beach of Middletown, brought death steadily nearer to Ileene Beauchamp, sitting on that lonely rock out of sight and hearing of the human world.
