First Sentence: The clock in the adjoining room had just struck the hour of twelve, when Dr. Ackroyd laid down the book he had been reading, yawned, stretched his long legs, and was about to rise and put out the light, preparatory to retiring to rest, when a loud peal of the doorbell resounded through the house.
Last Sentence: She made no reply; but the crimson flush which came into her cheek and the fact that she did not attempt to withdraw her hands were sufficient answer for him.
