First Sentence: Gerald Desmond sprang to his feet, his lip curling and his fine eyes flashing, as he heard the answer of Kate Dashwood, to whom he had been pleading for a fond remembrance if she could not give him her love.
Last Sentence: Here we will leave them, adding merely that when Gerald Desmond, formerly the poor tutor, but now the popular editor and famous author, asked Mr. Dashwood for his daughter's hand, he received it, together with the announcement that he was proud to claim him as a son.
