It was a dull, cold, and cheerless November afternoon, so cold and cheerless, in fact, that it had been resolved by Miggleson, seconded by Thatcher, and carried unanimously, that the playground was a howling desert, and that the only fit and proper place whereat to spend the few hours that intervened between the end of afternoon school and the beginning of evening study was in the immediate neighborhood of the stove in the school-room. |
