First Sentence: "The pews in church are rented to-night, mother," and Lucia did not look up from the straw she was sewing, perhaps because she could not afford the time for a glance, but more likely because she did not wish her mother to see the tear in her eye.
Last Sentence: They gave up their pew in church before the year was up, and their homely cottage too, and went to live in the elegant house beyond the clover field, for Lucia had been wooed and won by its generous master, as I was sure she would be from the beginning.
