New York Weekly, v. XXV, no. 9, January 13, 1870 (Issue) |
Author: |
Gray, Mary
|
Date: |
January 13, 1870 |
First Sentence: |
We were betrothed lovers, beautiful Jessie and I, and all expectation for the future lay, not in the direction of a home of luxury and wealth, but in a neat little cottage of our own, with a vine-covered porch and plenty of good victuals to eat, and warm clothes to wear. |
Last Sentence: |
My head pains me so when I think of the past, and people say I am crazy, and have shut me up in a large roomy house with a high wall surrounding it; but the beautiful lady with a black dress and widow's cap, that comes to see every day, and brings nice things to eat, and smooths my hair, and kisses my lips, and cools my forehead with her tears, says I am not crazy, and I believe her, because she looks so much like my Jessie. |
