July 13, 1895 |
First Sentence: |
The song of "Hail Columbia!" was written for a special occasion and for a special object; and the prime motive for its production was wholly a mercenary one, without the least ingredient of patriotism, for it was composed for a theatrical singer for the sole purpose of gain, on his part. |
Last Sentence: |
On one occasion a crowd filled the space in front of the author's residence, and suddenly at midnight, the song of "Hail Columbia!" burst from the lips of five hundred singers. |
