First of all we must know how soon after receiving warning of danger a train of three hundred and fifty tons, running a mile in thirty-six seconds can be stopped. |

And, in addition to this, it must be remembered that fast trains, such as are now being run on many lines in this country, would be simply impossible without the vigorous discipline, the constant energy, the keenest exactitude, and the care and attention to the details of the service that is the surest and most effective guard against all accidents. |
