Ever since God placed Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden the rose has been par excellence the queen of flowers, and it has been closely associated with history as well as poetry, and has been borne i s [sic] part both in Grecian culture and Roman luxury; for we are told that Nero lavished immense sums of money in the purchase of roses to adorn his palace when he entertained his courtiers, and filled not only his palace with these flowers, but also his court-yard. |
