First Sentence: Why it is so arranged belongs to the mysteries of creation, but if we may credit the census-takers and the statistic-makers generally, women are greatly in excess of their natural protectors in the bleak country known as New England.
Last Sentence: For, as a rule, the eligible young man never marries a woman who courts him, and this rule applies quite as well to men who are not eligible.
