First Sentence: "It's the very spot, boys. We might hunt the whole north woods over and not find a better one." (Good News edition)
We had been in camp a week, when early on a warm, cloudy morning, old Vic informed us that if we wanted some fun ducking, we would never have a better chance, as they were generally busy "dressing up" their feathers, and apparently more careless of danger that on clear days. (Good News edition)
A week of rainy, disagreeable weather followed our ducking expedition, and some of the boys were beginning to "salt things round, and look owly," as old Vic expressed it, when one night, as we were all gathered round doing justice to our supper, the old guide informed us that the next day we should have a deer drive. (Good News edition)
"We were all anxious for a "spearing" bout with the finny inhabitants of the lake, and decided that the first favorable night would see us at it. (Good News edition)
Excursions of various kinds followed our night fishing. (Good News edition)
A wild gorge, with a little stream running along between the steep, high banks, the latter covered with an almost impenetrable growth of trees and bushes which overhung the stream, and among them a perfect net-work of logs, crossed and recrossed, the work of some ambitious wind. (Good News edition)
Among our party were two who had never tasted bear meat--Rex and Jinx--and they eyed suspiciously the fragrant, juicy steaks that graced our "table" the next day. (Good News edition)
Last Sentence: And then we followed along, Indian file, after old Vic toward camp, "sadder but wiser boys." (Good News edition)
And at this point of the narrative he began talking of something else. (Good News edition)
He had done something to boast of when he reached home--i.e. caught a buck with his hands, and with his wet clothes slapping about him, and singing snatches of a jingling barcarole, he led us into camp. (Good News edition)
All agreed that we had had sport enough for one night, and without more ado the boats were headed toward the landing. (Good News edition)
And, with fully a hundred apiece of the plump-breasted fellows, we pulled for camp, while visions of a race feast danced before our eyes. (Good News edition)
We stripped the hide from the bear, meanwhile, and cut off some choice pieces of ham to carry back to the camp. (Good News edition)
Two hours afterward we took up our line of march for the nearest railroad station, and at six o'clock that night we steamed into Saginaw City. (Good News edition)
