First Sentence: It was midsummer many years ago, and a small party of three horsemen, Boone, Logan, and Mason, were returning from a short hunting expedition to Sand's Station, the only garrisoned settlement in the western part of Kentucky, which at the time my story opens, was still in its primitive state.
Last Sentence: Boone and Mason lived long after to be a terror to the Indians, and most fearfully did they avenge the death of poor Logan.
