First Sentence: One morning, as Lieutenant Henry Weston, who had obtained leave of absence from his vessel, the sloop-of-war Plymouth, then anchored off the town of Bushire, on the Persian Gulf coast, was wandering along the beach about ten miles from the port, he was suddenly startled by a woman's plaintive cries of distress, with which were mingled the sounds of sharp blows and a man's voice.
