First Sentence: It is no unusual thing for young whalemen, who were at first very impatient to go to sea, to place themselves on the "retired list" at some convenient opportunity, generally at the end of the first cruise, in the hope of shortening their voyage and sooner reaching the homes they have left behind them.
Last Sentence: That one had floated on a spar until he was picked up in an almost exhausted state by another whaleman, and through him the sad fate of the ship had been made known.
