First Sentence: A French nobleman who had suffered much from thieves at St. Petersburg made a wager with a member of the royal family that he could produce a Russian thief who would rob a man at the dinner table, and he might use every precaution to prevent it.
Last Sentence: But the most astonishing part of the performance was discovered in the fact that not only had the guest of the evening been robbed, but the host likewise.
