First Sentence: At the time when King Joseph, by order of Napoleon I., left the throne of Naples to occupy that of Spain, his authority in Spain was sustained only by force of arms, and though he thus for a time held the cities under control, the mountains were filled with guerrillas and banditti, who never omitted an opportunity to vent their deadly hate on the invader, while they preyed on all who fell in their way.
