First Sentence: When the U. S. steamer G-a was lying in port at Cape Haita, West Indies, in the year '54, the officers, in consequence of the town affording few facilities for pleasure or amusement, occupied a good deal of their time, when ashore, horseback riding, among the rest myself, I being particularly fond of the sport, and was never so well pleased as when astride the back of a noble horse.
