I am reminded by the thrilling account of "Peter, the Wild Boy," which recently appeared in the New York Weekly, to give the history of a strange child of the forest and the swamp, which was brought to my notice in 1818, while I was pursuing some investigations of the causes and treatment of yellow fever in Louisiana, and, for that end, had a temporary engagement as physician to a large sugar plantation as the best mode of sustaining myself while getting the insight I was seeking. |
