Author: Walder, George
Date: December 14, 1865
Edition Description: Note.-The clan Mac Vairley was a fierce, predatory tribe, living in the fastnesses of Northern Scotland, where they set at defiance the attempts of the English to destroy or subjugate them. A few of them still remain, and it was from these that the author obtained the preceding wild lyric, which was written by one of their celebrated bards many years ago. By the help of one of their number, who understood English, he translated it. In its native state it is a wild one without rhyme or metre, but with my humble efforts I hope I have made it something more acceptable. Vanach Avar, the terrible slogan with which they rushed from their mountain heights on their enemies, means in their tongue, onward and strike.
First Sentence: Hark! ye wild warriors, wake from your slumbers!
