Edition Description: New York Weekly edition (chapters I-II, pages 1-2 in New York Weekly, v. XXI, no. 1, November 23, 1865):
Introductory Note.-The glorious immortality attained by Abraham Lincoln, the late lamented President of the United States, has awakened a universal desire in the hearts of mankind to know more of his ancestors, and whence it was that he inherited those sterling qualities which have conferred upon his name and memory such signal honor. That the first Abraham Lincoln, the grandfather of the late President, was a noted pioneer, and lived in a wilderness in Kentucky, where he was killed by the Indians, is generally known to the public, and it is not too much to hope that the historians and biographers will in time investigate his life and character fully. In the meantime, while awaiting the action of history in the matter, I venture to hope that the present narrative of the experiences and exploits of a member of one branch of the family among the savages, will be acceptable, and that it will throw a pleasant light upon the hallowed memories to which it is consecrated.
First Sentence: The central region of Kentucky, traversed by a great river, covered by immense forests, and diversified by plains and mountains, presented to the eye of the observer, during the last quarter of the 18th century, one of those majestic solitudes which only the Western Continent can exhibit.
