First Sentence: Toward the opening of the month o July, 1843, immediately subsequent to the proclamation by General Houston, to the effect that an armistice had been agreed upon by Mexico and the young Republic of Texas, the city of Austin, the capital, then and now, of the state, was the center of attraction for hundreds of adventurers-mostly men bankrupt in fortune and desperate in character, holding their own and the lives of others in cheap estimation-who, unrestrained by law, were the terror of the few civilly-disposed residents of the place.
