My father was a village cobbler; good, honest soul ! [sic] would to heaven fate had allowed me the privilege of walking in his steps, although I would have had to keep a deputy to measure the ladies' ankles and attend to their numerous and dainty directions respecting those wonderful slippers, so skillfully gotten up for their lovers, husbands, friends and brothers, about Christmas and New Year, without becoming uncomfortably red in the face. |
