In the year 1850, about eighteen miles west of the city of Savannah, there stood upon a gentle accliuity in the county of Bergan, and not far from the banks of Ogeechee river, a huge and antiquated mansion, built in a architectural style that would, at the present day, be regarded as intolerably unfashionable.
