First Sentence: In looking over an antique and dilapidated volume, which a friend of mine, who deals largely in second-hand books and other relics of a literature long passed, gave me the other day, I chanced upon the quaintly-worded, narration of an incident connected with the New Forest, that struck me as peculiarly appropriate to be placed in my record of Daring Deeds of Boys. (Good News edition)
Last Sentence: The record from which I have enlarged this story, saith nothing of the fate which befell the evil Gamekeeper and his son-which was doubtless, what they deserved; but it does state that three years late Paul Pentock was the Gamekeeper of the New Forest, and that before the death of his royal patron, he was appointed Lord High Forester of England, while little Bertha became the wife of the sheriff of Notting ham.
