It was on the morning following the surrender of Vicksburg, when relays of soldiers were busily engaged in the mournful duty of burying the dead of both armies in huge pits dug for the purpose, that my attention was attracted toward some negroes, who eagerly scanned the upturned and ghastly faces of the dead as if in search of some one. |
