During the late civil war, when East Tennessee had virtually passed into the hands of the Union forces, the Ohio and Tennessee Railroad, with its branches leading to Knoxville, Chattanooga, and other points, was almost constantly engaged in carrying bodies of troops and war material from one depot to the other, and was, therefore, indispensable to the continued occupancy of that portion of the country.
