First Sentence: Some years ago, when this now great city of New York was a small town compared with its present dimensions, and the houses of our first families were located around the Battery Park and the lower portions of the different streets leading thereto; when our merchant princes were solid men, and not ashamed to do their own marketing; when the administration of our municipal affairs was conducted with a view to the public good only, and no "bones" were to be found in city contracts-there stood on Pine street a massive four-story brick building, devoted to the iron trade, over the door of which, in prominent letters, was the name, "IRA Jones."
