It is well known that a number of the guerillas at the West acquired such a liking for their wild and lawless life, and such a distaste for a quiet and peaceful existence, that they were unable or unwilling, at the close of the war, to settle down to honest labor or business, but persisted in continuing openly and without excuse, deeds of robbery and violence, similar to those which they had previously committed under the gauzy pretext of carrying on war. |
