First Sentence: The wind roared in the tops of the trees, and around the tall chimneys outside, and whistled through every crack and crevice of the desolate mansion; the rain beat ceaselessly against the window panes, the dogs barked and howled in the distance; the night was dark and dismal, and everything conspired to give me a feeling of dread as I sat alone by the bedside of a lady whose life was despaired of, and who had been ill for many days.
