First Sentence: "Up the spout;" "at mine uncle's;" "in quod;" "put up;" "in hock;" "gone to Jerusalem," are some of the numerous expressions with which careless, improvident gentlemen of the Dick Swiveler type are familiar, and by which they intend to convey that some article of personal property has been pledged at the pawnbroker's.
Last Sentence: I may be mistaken about the appointing power, but it is certainly the best institution we have, and productive of much good in shielding people from the extortion of unprincipled and dishonest pawnbrokers.
