In every country in the world other than our own the Star Spangled America, of which we all are disposed to brag so much-stars, and Garters, and Epaulets, and all sorts of gay and fancy uniforms, have some certain social significance; they really mean something; they denote that the man who wears them has, by some signal act of official bravery in the battle-field, or by special excellence in the sphere of social life, entitled himself to such peculiar recognition by his sovereign. |
