The customs which prevailed in the towns of New England seventy-five or a hundred years ago are now many of them but memories in the minds of the older inhabitants, and the young people smile indulgently and in a somewhat superior manner when any old fogy refers to the days of long ago as happier and better than these highly favored days of the closing nineteenth century. |
