Among the national and patriotic airs of Spain the two most popular are "La Marcha Real" (the Royal March), and "El Himno de Riego" (Riego's Hymn). The royal March is an ancient composition, which has long been familiar to the ears of all Spaniards. It is struck up in Spain whenever the king passes, and is frequently played at patriotic assemblages of various kinds. Riego's Hymn, known as the national air, is sun by the people on similar occasions. It was composed by the Spanish poet Huerta, and a translation of the Spanish words is as follows: |
