First Sentence: Several years ago, before the Pacific Railroad had spanned the American Desert with its iron tracks, there was a military station, a small adobe fort, on the North Platte, bear the present site of Hawk-eye, where a hundred infantry men were generally located by the War Department, more for the purpose of keeping up a military show to the Indians than for any service so few men could perform in that isolated situation.
