First Sentence: In those dark days of our great Revolutionary struggle in the latter part of 1776, when George Washington was obliged to fall back from New York city, there was a tory leader in Westchester who was notorious for his daring and his cruelty, using every opportunity in his power to harass the patriots, shrinking from no deed of rapine or pillage, no act of destruction or injury.
