First Sentence: Some one once observed, very truthfully, that if the ingenuity and intelligence exerted by rogues for the perpetration of their rascalities could be directed into honest channels, it would be for the great benefit of the world at large; and several instances in my own experience have illustrated the force of this remark.
Last Sentence: I had always been an honest man, but felt a momentary sense of humiliation; for I had been treated with contempt by a pickpocket!
