First Sentence: There was a sharp-featured, middle-aged woman, dressed in black, on the Desbrosses street ferry-boat the other afternoon, and just after the boat had left the New York slip a man of perhaps sixty winters, also arrayed in rusty black, and with a weed on his hat, dropped into the seat alongside of the lady in question and remarked: "Pleasant weather we're havin', mum."
