First Sentence: To be caught "out of sight of land" on a burning prairie, with the wind driving full on; to find yourself in front of a herd of charging buffaloes, whose solid front stretches away on either hand as far as the eye can reach; to be surrounded by a yelling, screeching war-party of savages, keen for blood and scalps, and no reasonable hope or chance of escape; to be cooped up with a grizzly, after his winter's nap, in a narrow cavern, are, and all who have any knowledge of the situations will admit it, very trying on the nerves, to say the least of it.
