| ENGL 330 Spring 2018's Thoughts: | "Oonomoo, The Huron opens on Hans Vanderbum, a German married to a Native woman in the forests of Ohio. Vanderbum encounters a Huron Indian, Oonomoo, after his wife told him to stop being lazy (which he is) and go fish. Oonomoo informs Vanderbum of a white woman, Mary Prescott, who has been taken prisoner by the Shawnees. Oonomoo joins with Lieutenant Canfield, her lover, and Cato, a black servant who survived the Shawnee attack, to rescue Mary. Oonomoo first goes off by himself to visit his wife and child hidden in the woods and his good Christian wife inspires him to swear never to take a Shawnee scalp again. Oonomoo returns to Lieutenant Candfield, then meets up with his Miami allies and they go to save Mary Prescott. Mary’s father, Captain Prescott, is then reunited with his daughter. But the Shawnees discover Oonomoo’s secret residence in the woods and after a great battle, both Oonomoo and his wife Fluellina are mortally wounded. Serendipitously, the Christian missionary who introduced Fluellina to Christianity is there and helps them both into death, which Oonomoo and Fluellina face hand in hand while staring at the sky together.
