ENGL 330 Spring 2018's Thoughts: The Hunter’s Cabin is a tale of tension, trickery, and battle. The novel is related to a previous book, “The Riflemen of the Miami," also written by Edward S. Ellis. It is Indian summer in Southern Ohio, and young Annie Stanton is left alone at her father’s cabin in the middle of the woods for several days when he leaves on a hunting campaign. Oonamoo, a friendly Huron, warns her of impending danger: the Shawnees are headed her way. She must make it to the nearby village before it is too late. Before she has a chance to head off, however, young hunter George Ferrington and Dutchman Hans Vanderbum come from the village to aid her. The two men take turns standing guard at the cabin while they formulate a plan to escape, which involves stopping the Shawnees before they can destroy the cabin and the village. This proves difficult as George and Hans are at odds with one another. Meanwhile, Annie’s father and the family dog, Lion, are nowhere to be found. Oonamoo returns to help them, disguised as a Shawnee. The team has high hopes of evading the tribe and finding Annie’s father, but they must first prove their worth against the Shawnee."--Veronica LeRoy, undergraduate student at NIU enrolled in ENGL 330, Spring 2018
