ENGL 330 Spring 2018's Thoughts: "The novel starts off by introducing King Barnaby, the chief sachem, and Oliver, a member of his tribe, who live in a valley located near the Ristigouche River. Oliver despises the white men, Duncan and Adams, who have recently settled in the area, while King Barnaby seeks to befriend them. Other characters include Rosa, an Indian girl who likes the whites, and Annette and Paul, a white couple who had to leave their daughter behind. Annette and Paul soon become a target for Oliver, who has vowed to kill every white person he comes across. At one point, Duncan also meets Maria, the daughter of Annette and Paul, but she is attacked by Oliver, eventually dying from her injuries. The story is set around the ways that people escape from Oliver's violence and how the lives of his victims intertwine."--Jacquelin Marrero, undergraduate student at NIU enrolled in ENGL 330, Spring 2018
