ENGL 330 Spring 2018's Thoughts: "In The White Canoe, a young Comanche chief, Isaonie, is overtaken by a dream-like vision of the White Canoe of legend. This legend has it that on her wedding day to the young chief, the maiden dressed in white died and her soul became the White Spirit that lay upon the White Stone Canoe. In his grief, the young chief went and spoke to his village elder, who told him of a place where the spirits may be found and where he may go to rescue his fell lover. Isaonie himself falls into the alluring trap of this legend when he comes into contact with a girl fitting the description of the maiden: Amy Wilson. This is where the B storyline of the novel comes in, before A and B intermingle, as poor Amy is to be “wed” to Richard Seaton (who is accompanied by his slave, “Ancient” Job Samson). Richard and Amy are out to hide away from the world until Amy’s parents and the accompanying world until they are ready to come back to the world. Except, much like Isaonie’s plans, everything starts to fall apart when the white, Comanche, and Apache meet."--Nathan Haffey, undergraduate student at NIU enrolled in ENGL 330, Spring 2018
