ENGL 330 Spring 2018's Thoughts: | "In Sagamore of Saco, by Mrs. E. Oaks Smith, Hope Vines is a beautiful white-haired girl, admired by the neighboring Indians for her enchanting character and despised by her fellow settlers for her unorthodox behavior. The latter begin to whisper suspicions that her unladylike behavior and unusual beauty are due to witchcraft, fearing that the young John Bonyton is not in love with Hope Vines but is instead bewitched. Meanwhile, Acashee, the clever and wise Indian daughter of the chief, who grew up with both Hope and John, sinks into despair when rejects her affections, confessing that he is in love with Hope. Disappointed and jealous, Acashee plots her revenge against her childhood friends, encouraging her chief-father to abduct the young Hope and make her a powerful medicine-woman of their tribe. With two groups working against the girl, it seems that all hope might be lost."--Jaemee Cordero, undergraduate student at NIU enrolled in ENGL 330, Spring 2018 |
