Edition Description: Standard Library of Romance edition (in Standard Library of Romance, vol. III):
"The Golden Belt," in the other editions of this novel, is given as by Colin Barker, but the title page of this book seems to indicate that it is by Thomas.
ENGL 693 Spring 2018's Thoughts: "Set in the province of Cahay, The Golden Belt is a novel about ill-fated lovers fighting against social and familial oppression. Guarica, a half-Carib, half-Spaniard princess of great beauty and intellect, seeks to be with the object of her affections, Hernando de Leon -- a Spanish cavalier serving at Fort Isabella under the direction of Christopher Columbus. The fates of Guarica and Hernando de Leon are woven in the past of their fathers’ actions during the initial colonization efforts of Cabay. The future of Guarica’s brother, Orazimbo, who is destined to become a chief, also acts as a catalyst towards actions that potentially threatened to turn the island from its peaceful, cohesive state to pandemonium –- an island plagued by war between Carib tribes and Spanish soldiers. Through the multitude of harrowing journeys and encounters of Guarcia and Hernando de Leon, the reader is left reflecting on the value of selfless, virtuous actions over secular gains acquired by force. "--Natalie Santiago, graduate student at NIU enrolled in ENGL 693, Spring 2018
