ENGL 330 Spring 2018's Thoughts:	"In The Red Belt, The Tuscarora, Sampson Lowe, Red Belt, Roydon Howe, and their dog, Eagle, set out to find a treasure that was lost in the Ohio River. Sampson is an old, white frontiersman with no alliances to any tribe or person. Roydon Howe is a young white, hunter and friend of Sampson’s. And Red Belt is a handsome and quiet Tuscarora that knows the ins and outs of the forest. Their journey soon becomes more treacherous due to the land disputes occurring over--what they call--“Dunmore’s War”. These disputes were mainly among the Tuscarora tribe, the Mingo tribe, and the colonists. The men are attacked almost immediately and Roydon Howe is captured and taken by Wild Hawk, a Mingo warrior, and Derrick Thorne, an old foe of Sampson. We are first told that Derrick Thorne is tasked by the Governor to make peace with the tribes surrounding the colonies. We soon learn, however, that he is actually trying to uncover information about the tribes in order to defeat them, assisted in this pursuit by Wild Hawk. Sampson and Red Belt resolve to find and rescue their friend. Several confrontations and near-death battles ensue with both Thorne’s men and the Mingos before they finally find Howe, who is released by Miskwa, Red Belts’ lover. The men escape to find their treasure, but just when they believe all to be settled, Thorne and Wild Hawk attack them again. Sampson defeats Thorne, but Red Belt does not end up so lucky. Both he and Wild Hawk die fighting each other.
