ENGL 330 Spring 2018's Thoughts: "Captain Kessler and his crew engage a group of Indians in battle, during which their captain is seized and Harmer Dorlan is injured. Afterwards, Job Dean--one of the best trappers in the territory--arrives on the scene and promises to find the captain, while Dorlan is cared for by the lovely Margaret Boyntou in a story that is seemingly all their own. The apprehended captain is brought to the Indian camp, where he is gawked at and treated like criminal. He is bound, guarded, and begins to lose all hope until a beautiful Indian woman approaches him to give him food--and a thrill that he does not understand. All the while, Job Dean and his bunch are journeying to find and rescue Captain Kessler. When Dean engages in battle with and kills some Indian men, his past is brought to the front of his mind, and he relieves himself of the dark story that led him to his current circumstance. When they meet a stranger on their path in the middle of Dean’s account, a tangle of back stories reveals the murky pasts that lurk behind nearly everyone on the frontier."--Amy Freeman, undergraduate student at NIU enrolled in ENGL 330, Spring 2018
