ENGL 693 Spring 2018's Thoughts: | "The Abbot family has decided to move further west from Pennsylvania into Kentucky. They send their daughter, Marian, ahead via flatboat, along with other settlers and a handful of rangers. Though the trip starts well, the settlers ignore warnings of an attack by the “frontier angel,” a mysterious ‘crazy squaw’ who is known to help white settlers. When they disregard her warning, the settlers are overtaken by Tom McGable, a white man leading a group of Shawnee Indians. There is one survivor of the attack, Jim Peterson, who makes it to the new settlement fort. Peterson, along with Marian’s fiancé, Russel Mansfield, and Dick Dingle, another ranger, vow to hunt down McGable and make him pay for the flatboat attack, which is only the latest of many acts of violence. The men spend months chasing McGable as the Kentucky settlement weathers further attacks. Thanks to the Frontier Angel, the fort and its denizens suffer no real losses, however, the mystery of what happened to Marian Abbot, as well as the identity of the Frontier Angel, only deepens as time passes. Eventually, after several near misses, McGable is captured and confesses that he did not kill Marian, but that she was taken captive by the Shawnee he lives with and will be killed if he does not return. The rangers, along with Russel Mansfield, mount a rescue and sneak into the Shawnee settlement. The mission is a catalyst in which many mysteries are solved, including the identity of the Frontier Angel."--Jennifer Jenkins, graduate student at NIU enrolled in ENGL 693, Spring 2018 |
