| ENGL 330 Spring 2018's Thoughts: | "This book follows the life of Balt Walters, an Indian hunter, and is set when all of the country west the Northern branches was a vast wilderness. Balt Walters is a young hunter who is bold and restless and loves the dangers of the forest. The story begins with Balt Walters and and father-in-law, Dan Lee, talking about how scarce food is because of settlers chopping down trees in the forest. This causes the family to relocate to another part of the forest that the settlers have not yet touched, which is where the story begins. Balt Walters goes through something very traumatic that causes him to disappear. He is seen once by a group of hunters, but after that he is not seen for years. Between those years, Henri Bonte is the main character, leading a group of hunters against the Indians, mainly the Dacotahs. Another hunter, who is nameless, gains a reputation for killing Dacotahs, but his identity is a mystery. Eventually, Balt Walters is revealed to be the hunter and he takes revenge on the Native Americans who wronged him and lives happily ever after."--Riquia Hill, undergraduate student at NIU enrolled in ENGL 330, Spring 2018 |
